The Villa Ingrid local guide
Istria from Rakovci: coastal towns, hilltops and Roman history
Istria offers several different kinds of day out: a harbour town, a hilltop lunch, a Roman amphitheatre or an island excursion. You do not need to fit them all into one day. Use Villa Ingrid as a base, choose a focus for each outing and alternate exploring with quieter days around your private pool.
01
Rovinj: old town and Golden Cape
Rovinj's historic core rises through narrow lanes and small squares towards the Church of St Euphemia. Start with a walk around the harbour, then explore the streets uphill at your own pace. Comfortable shoes help on stone surfaces; do not assume the old town or bell-tower visit is step-free.
Our suggested coastal day is simple: old town in the morning, lunch by the harbour, then choose between a stroll in Zlatni rt (Golden Cape) Forest Park and returning to the villa. The park's paths and promenades follow a different, greener side of Rovinj. Check the weather and choose how much walking suits your group.

02
Motovun: a hilltop and a long lunch
Motovun brings a change of scenery from the coast. The medieval town sits above the Mirna valley, with views across vineyards and woodland. Make the town and its viewpoints the centre of the visit, allowing for slopes and stone streets rather than planning it as a quick drive-through stop.
The surrounding area is associated with truffles and the wines Malvazija and Teran. Look for seasonal dishes, or arrange a producer visit in advance. A tasting is something to book directly, not an activity to assume will be available on arrival. Check parking and access arrangements on the day, and agree who will drive if wine is part of your lunch.

03
Pula: Arena, Forum and Roman layers
Pula's Arena is a first-century Roman amphitheatre and a strong starting point for a history-focused day. The underground exhibition introduces ancient olive growing and wine production. After visiting, walk towards the Forum and the Temple of Augustus, which houses ancient sculpture.
The Arena also hosts events. Stage work, sound checks or performances can affect visiting arrangements, so check the official operator's information before buying tickets. Our suggested day is Arena → old-town walk → Forum → lunch, with enough flexibility for heat and crowds. Keep Brijuni as a separate outing if you want an unhurried pace.

Brijuni: plan around the boat
For an island day, start with the official Brijuni National Park tickets and departure information. Boats for the park leave from Fažana. The guided Veliki Brijun excursion is described by the park as about three and a half hours and includes the return boat, guide, tourist train and the attractions specified for that ticket.
Other ticket types offer different experiences. Choose your intended departure and tour language in advance, and leave time for parking and boarding in Fažana. Not every boat excursion advertised around the harbour includes landing in the national park or park admission. Confirm exactly what your chosen ticket includes and check the seasonal timetable.

Olive oil, local food and a realistic holiday plan
An olive-oil tasting can be the main activity of an afternoon, rather than an extra squeezed between distant towns. Our homepage introduces Chiavalon in Vodnjan and Ol Istria in Poreč, alongside a few restaurants and taverns to explore. Contact producers directly for current tasting options and reservations.
For a short stay, consider three different outings: a coastal day in Rovinj, an inland day around Motovun, and a history or island day in Pula or Brijuni. These are our planning suggestions, not a tour package. Leave spare time for spontaneous stops and the villa's terrace, garden and pool.
Plan your visit
- Check live navigation from Rakovci before setting off. Traffic, parking and seasonal restrictions affect journey times.
- Choose one main destination per day; avoid combining distant stops simply because they appear close on a regional map.
- Book island departures, guided visits and producer tastings in advance when your date or language matters.
- Bring sun protection, water and shoes suitable for stone streets. Keep a flexible alternative for poor weather.
Which outing should we choose first?
Choose by interest: Rovinj for a coastal town, Motovun for hilltop scenery and food, Pula for Roman history, or Brijuni for a planned island excursion.
Can we visit without a car?
A car makes exploring from Villa Ingrid in Rakovci easier. If you prefer not to drive, arrange suitable transport in advance and confirm collection and return details directly with the provider.
