The Villa Ingrid local guide
Poreč: old-town walks, mosaics and days beyond the beach
Poreč rewards an unhurried visit. Its historic centre fits a day of wandering between Roman streets, Byzantine mosaics and cafés beside the sea. From Villa Ingrid in Rakovci, choose one main outing and leave room for a swim back at the villa. Here is a practical starting point for planning your own day.
01
Start with the old town
Follow Decumanus into the historic peninsula, then turn into the smaller streets around Cardo. The Roman street pattern is still part of the town today. Look for the Romanesque House and continue towards Marafor, the former Roman forum, before circling back along the waterfront.
The pleasure here is in the pauses: a shaded square, a shop window, a coffee overlooking boats. Our suggested route is Decumanus → the basilica complex → Marafor → the waterfront. It is a sequence to adapt to your interests, not a timed tour. Wear comfortable shoes for stone paving and leave the hottest part of a summer day for a longer break.

Make time for the Euphrasian Basilica
The UNESCO-listed episcopal complex is the highlight of a first visit to Poreč. Its sixth-century basilica, mosaics, atrium, baptistery and episcopal palace tell a story that reaches well beyond a quick photograph of the exterior. The complex was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997.
Treat this as a visit to an active religious site. Check current admission arrangements and access around services before travelling. We deliberately do not quote fixed ticket prices or opening hours: the linked visitor information is the place to confirm what is available on your date. Allow time to look closely at the mosaics rather than adding the basilica as a rushed stop between other activities.

Lunch, the waterfront and a slower afternoon
After the old town, take a waterfront break. A restaurant lunch works well as the middle of the day, especially if you want to return to Rakovci for an afternoon by the pool. For named places to investigate, see our restaurant introductions on the villa homepage and check the venue's current menu directly.
If you would rather swim on the coast, choose a beach before leaving town. Brulo and the Town Beach offer different mixtures of pebbles, rock and paved areas; our beach guide explains the differences. A town walk followed by one beach is usually a more relaxed plan than trying several coastal stops in the same afternoon.
04
A different outing: Baredine Cave
Baredine offers a change from the coast. The operator describes a guided visit of about 40 minutes through five chambers, along a route of roughly 300 metres. The cave temperature is around 14°C, so an extra layer and suitable shoes are useful even on a warm day.
Consider the stairs before booking: the route involves around 270 steps and is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. This is particularly relevant when planning with young children or anyone who finds steps difficult. Winter visits require advance arrangement; consult the operator for the current schedule, language and ticket arrangements.

Cycling: choose a route that suits you
If cycling is part of your holiday, explore the official Parenzana route information before choosing a section. The former railway runs through northwestern Istria and offers an alternative view of the countryside. It should not be treated as one uniform, easy family cycle path.
Some sections are rough and the official portal recommends mountain bikes. Match the surface and distance to everyone in your group, carry water and organise bike collection or your return route in advance. For a relaxed holiday, one well-chosen section is a better starting point than an ambitious full-route plan.

Plan your visit
- A car makes outings from Rakovci easier. Park outside the historic core and explore central Poreč on foot.
- For a first visit, pair the old town and basilica with lunch. Save the cave or a cycling outing for another day.
- Check opening hours, event restrictions and parking conditions close to your visit; services vary by season.
- Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes. Plan breaks around your group's pace rather than a packed checklist.
Can we combine Poreč and a beach?
Yes. Start with the old town, then choose one nearby beach for the afternoon. Use our beach guide to select a sea entrance and surface that suit your group.
Is the cave a good rainy-day option?
It can be, if tours operate on your date and everyone can manage the stairs. Confirm availability with Baredine first; the cave is not wheelchair or pushchair accessible.
